چکیده

We propose a measurement of double-polarization observables in the d(~e, e′~ p) reaction to investigate the spin structure of the deuteron. The individual components P ′ x and P ′ z, measured in parallel kinematics and in a broad range of pm, will reveal the dynamics of the deuteron spin structure and the manifestation of the D-state component in the deuteron ground-state wave-function. This will show to what extent the deuteron can be used as a neutron target. In contrast, the P0 y and the P ′ x/P ′ z ratio will mirror the underlying spindependent reaction mechanism. When using the P ′ x/P ′ z ratio to extract information on the electric form-factors, modern models surprisingly suggest that the D-state has little effect even at high missing momenta, while the effects from the spin-dependent reaction mechanism are enormous. A detailed study of these is extremely important to learn when the deuteron can be used as an effective neutron target, and also for the few-body physics. We will measure the cross-sections and the recoil polarization components P ′ x , P ′ z, and P0 y as functions of pm. Consequently, we will be able to extract the individual structure functions fL, fT, f n LT, f ′ t LT, and f ′ l T in the corresponding region of pm. The experiment requires a 70μA polarized beam at 0.845GeV and 3.2GeV, and the standard HRS configuration of Hall A with FPP capability. We request 243 hours of beam time.

LOI to JLab PAC 31 RF Cherenkov picosecond timing technique for Jlab 12 GeV physics program

A new particle identification device for Jlab 12 GeV physics program is proposed. It is based on the measurement of time information by means of a new radio frequency picosecond phototube (RFPP) and time measuring concept. The expected time measurement precision for Cherenkov time-of-flight (TOF) detector in a “head-on” geometry based on RFPP is about or less than 5 picoseconds, FWHM. The propo...

New proposal to JLab PAC 27 December 3 , 2004 Structure of the Roper resonance from measurements

We propose to study the structure of the Roper resonance by a measurement of recoil proton polarization components in the p(~e, e′~ p)π0 reaction in Hall A. The components exhibit strong sensitivities to the pertinent resonant Roper multipoles M1− and S1−, and will be measured in a broad range of Q2 and W . The large kinematic coverage will allow us to attain a better overall understanding of t...

The Importance of Higher Twist Corrections in Polarized DIS

The higher twist corrections h (x)/Q to the spin dependent proton and neutron g1 structure functions are extracted from the world data on g1(x,Q ) in a model independent way and found to be non-negligible. Their role in determining the polarized parton densities in the nucleon is discussed. It is also considered how the results are influenced by the recent JLab and HERMES/d inclusive DIS data. ...

( A New Proposal to Jefferson Lab PAC 34 ) Measurement of the Neutron Electromagnetic Form Factor Ratio

We propose a measurement of the electromagnetic form factor ratio of the neutron, GE /G n M, at high four–momentum transfer values of Q 2 = 5.0, 6.8, and 10.2 GeV2 in double polarized semi-exclusive 3 −→ He(~e,e′n)pp scattering in quasi–elastic kinematics by measuring the transverse asymmetry, A⊥, of the cross section. This quantity can then be used to quickly extract the electric form factor, ...

Letter of Intent to JLab PAC 25 December 2 , 2003 Extraction of G pE from a double - polarization measurement of two - body 3 He breakup

We propose to determine the proton electric form-factor G E at high Q2 by measuring the transverse asymmetry Ax in the 3 ~ He(~e, e′p)d reaction. We present a doublepolarization approach distinct both from a cross-section measurement and recoil polarimetry. As the key instrument we propose to use the two-body breakup of polarized 3He acting as an effective polarized proton target.
